GEORGETOWN, GUYANA - H.E. René Van Nes, Ambassador for the EU to Guyana and Suriname, has given his strong endorsement for the upcoming International Business Conference Guyana 2025, emphasising the event's alignment with Europe's Global Gateway strategy and its potential to strengthen economic ties between Europe and the Caribbean region.
Speaking about the conference's "Building Bridges" theme, Ambassador Van Nes noted the natural synergy with the EU's Global Gateway initiative. "Building bridges in Global Gateway sort of go in the same direction," he stated, highlighting how both initiatives focus on connecting countries, people, and economies across continents.
The Ambassador emphasised the untapped potential for European investment in Guyana, stating candidly, "I think it is a missed opportunity for European companies if they don't recognize Guyana as a destination to invest, and it is a missed opportunity for Guyana if they don't, they're not able to attract European private sector." Ambassador Van Nes highlighted the significant market opportunity that Europe presents for Guyanese businesses. "If you look at the European Union, you will see a market of 50 million people that are very eager to buy sustainably sourced products," he explained. "The EU has no tariffs, so Guyana can export to the European Union tariff-free now and for the future because that is not going to change."
The Ambassador pointed to successful collaboration already underway in the pharmaceutical sector as an example of effective partnership. He described how the EU is working with the Guyanese government to establish proper regulatory frameworks, noting, "We're putting our money in and together with the government of Guyana, we are making sure there is a regulatory environment which will then allow the private sector to come in and to build factories here in Guyana that will produce medicines."
Regarding future opportunities, Ambassador Van Nes expressed enthusiasm about potential infrastructure projects, particularly a proposed bridge between Guyana and Suriname. "The EU has a lot of experience to turn such a piece of infrastructure into something that works for people," he said, emphasizing the importance of effective customs regulations and security measures.
The Ambassador concluded with a compelling message for global business leaders: "My message to the global leaders is do not miss this opportunity. Guyana has set off on an incredible trajectory with phenomenal economic growth, but being respectful for nature and its people. And I think that is a real example where everyone should be part of. So don't miss this opportunity."
The International Business Conference Guyana 2025 promises to be a pivotal platform for fostering European-Caribbean business relationships, with Ambassador Van Nes's endorsement underscoring the EU's commitment to deepening economic partnerships in the region.
