Guyana Launches Maritime Certification Drive to Meet Industry Labour Needs
)
Guyana's maritime sector is on the cusp of expansion, with projections showing a need for at least 2000 skilled workers over the next five to seven years. In response, the public sector is partnering with the United Kingdom and Nations University to establish a certification programme that will ensure a fully trained and accredited workforce to support maritime and offshore operations.
President Dr. Irfaan Ali, speaking at a Shipping Association of Guyana mixer, stressed the importance of aggressive human capital development to meet the sector’s evolving demands. The initiative forms part of a broader strategy to position the maritime industry as a cornerstone of Guyana’s national development, alongside rising investments in dockyards, dredging operations, and modern port infrastructure.
Supporting workforce inclusivity, a US$120 000 maritime training programme is currently underway through a partnership between Tidewater Inc. and the Office of the First Lady. The initiative targets young women, training them as officers-in-charge of navigational or engineering watch roles, with hands-on sea training in the final year.
These capacity-building efforts are vital as Guyana transitions into a regional maritime and logistics hub. With rising traffic volumes and increased offshore activities, the certification programme is expected to ensure local talent can meet international standards and take full advantage of emerging opportunities in the sector.
